Fibromyalgia is a syndrome whose symptoms consist of chronic pain & stiffness. Massage therapy is an alternative treatment for this condition. It is ideal for fibromyalgia pain management.

What is it Like to Live With Fibromyalgia ?

It can be very difficult to live with fibromyalgia since it affects your entire body, even your emotions. This complex, arthritic muscle disease is serious. Some of it’s most debilitating symptoms include :

  • Widespread pain that is more intense at the 18 trigger point locations (picture right)
  • Fatigue
  • Stiffness
  • Depression
  • Nerve & Hormone imbalances
  • Difficulty sleeping

Massage therapy is able to specifically address the symptoms of fibromyalgia. This is because massage reduces pain & tension, improves your ability to sleep & energizes your entire body since it is able to increase your circulation. For this reason, massage therapy is ideal for helping you relax & reduce your stress levels. It also directly impacts what seems to be the underlying cause of fibromyalgia : the production of your brain’s chemical messengers.

Some researchers also believe that massage therapy increases the production of neurotransmitters (i.e endorphins). These block the feelings of pain. The Touch Research Institute in Miami Florida has also found that massage therapy also leads to the reduction of substance P (a chemical messenger), which is responsible for pain. Whenever the brain’s chemistry is improved patients reported that they were in a better mental state & that they were able to reach a deeper state of sleep.

What Type Of Massage Is Best ?

Truth be told, all forms of massage are beneficial because they help your body release toxins, improve it’s blood flow, relieve pain & improve your mental well-being. It is important to find a therapist who knows about fibromyalgia & has experience treating patients with this syndrome.

How Often You Should Get A Massage

As far as when someone should get a massage – once or twice a month is usually able to reduce your fibromyalgia symptoms. This is not going to cure your fibromyalgia but lifestyle changes such as this & other alternative therapies can really make a huge difference. For this reason, you may wish to look into other types of alternative therapies that can also be used to relieve pain. These therapies include acupuncture :, Guided imagery, a healthy diet, daily stretching & meditation. Coupled with these other therapies. Massage therapy can be a big help.
