golfers elbow / What is it ?
Do you think you may have Golfer’s Elbow ? Well the information below can give you the details to decide if you may have & explain how it can be treated.
The medical epicondyle, the boney bit on the inside of the elbow or simply the opposite side to the “funny bone” is caused by repetitive overuse of these muscles, for example, forceful, repeated bending of the fingers & wrist, repeated stress on the arm during the acceleration phase of the throwing motion, & repeated tightening of the flexor muscles & tendons during a golf swing. Or it can simply be brought on by trauma to the medial (inside) aspect of the elbow. Neck problems, arthritis, rheumatism & gout may cause similar symptoms.
The symptoms are pain & tenderness at the medial epicondyle, particularly when the wrist is flexed or when objects are grasped or lifted. Extending the arm becomes difficult because of the pain. In some cases, recovery can take months because the inflamed tendon or tendons heal slowly.
Treatment for Golfer’s Elbow
Could include using Deep Tissue Massage & Acupressure Massage using cross friction techniques on the forearms & using some “soft” manipulation techniques to ensure smooth functioning & mobility within the wrist.
From then on treatment will be tailored to follow the reaction to the previous treatment & could include MET (Muscle energy techniques ) to the muscle of the forearm to improve their function which long term should help reduce the strain on the tendon at the elbow.
Applying a cold therapy & compression wrap for ten to fifteen minutes every few hours will reduce the immediate pain & inflammation & this can then be reduced to three to four times per day.
Rest is very important. Golfers elbow will not heal if it is not allowed to rest. Continuing to use the wrist may result in the injury becoming chronic which is much more difficult to treat.
Treatment that will help Golfers Elbow Include :
- Functional Assessment.
- Deep Tissue Massage.
- Tui Na (Chinese Massage & Manipulation )
- Acupressure Massage.
- MET ( Muscle Energy Techniques).
- Muscle Re-education, To Improve Muscle Control.
- Electrotherapy (TENS).
- Exercise Programs, To Strengthen Your Muscles & Improve Movement.
These techniques are intended to help with the pain & help heal the injury. But if you don’t rest the injured area fully, you risk doing further damage ! I know what it’s like to have to not do the thing you love the most for a while, but at the end of the day, once it’s healed properly you will be able to enjoy pain free golf !
