Pregnancy Massage Techniques & Benefits

Unless you’re familiar with a range of massage techniques, “massage for pregnancy” may seem a little unclear. What exactly is it & how is it different from “regular” massage ? The short answer is, pregnancy massage is a program of therapeutic treatment including both prenatal massage & postpartum massage that is designed to support, promote, & improve the health & well-being of mother & baby. The specifics of the treatment will vary from client to client, but the overall benefits–reduction of pain, stress & discomfort–are shared by all.

Massage is a relaxing & soothing way to alleviate some common pregnancy complaints. However, many women still wonder whether it is safe. It is not recommended that you have a massage on your back or abdomen during pregnancy; this could potentially stimulate a miscarriage or disrupt the placenta. However, there are no notable concerns regarding the massage of any other part of your body during those vital first twelve weeks. During your second & third trimester, it is safe to be massaged across your torso & parts of your body.

The Benefits of Massage in Pregnancy

RELAXES THE BODY : This is a common benefit, but most people seem to forget about how helpful it is to have a nice massage that will cause them to relax just a bit more. It is nice how so much pregnant women end up very stressed, so a nice massage can help alleviate a bit of that stress.

If SLEEPLESSNESS or pregnancy-related INSOMNIA is a concern, fret not. This massage enables good sleep, which is essential for the body during the pregnancy term.

IMPROVES OUTCOME OF LABOUR & EASES PAIN : You probably didn’t know about this, but a massage in pregnancy can actually improve the outcome of your labour. When your baby comes out, it will be very successful because of the relaxation that you were able to get. Don’t forget that it can also ease pain. So you are definitely going to have a very easy time once that wonderful/scary moment arrives.

Pregnancy Massage Techniques

Pregnancy massage can be done in a number of ways; the most common is for the mother to lie on her side, bolstered with pillows. This way the therapist can get access to most parts of the client’s body whilst the client remains comfortable on the massage table. There are also a number of special massage cushions available that can be used specifically for pregnancy massage that help support mother & baby.

Most of the techniques used during pregnancy massage are effleurage, long sweeping strokes that relax the muscles. Very deep tissue work is not recommended during pregnancy.


Pregnancy is a time of special care for new mothers-to-be & also an important time to prepare for the physical strains placed on the body during the birthing process. Enjoying this precious time can be a lot easier when taking time for relaxation methods is remembered & massage therapy is a great way for pregnant women to do just that.
